Eigen plantjes eerst. Tervurenaars can once again purchase local plants through the Behaag Je Tuin initiative, running until 15 October. The project aims not only to increase greenery but also to provide habitats for bees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.
Available for purchase are a variety of high-stemmed fruit trees, deciduous trees, willows, and climbers. “Your garden can make a difference for nature and climate,” town hall says.
Tervurenaars must place their orders by Tuesday 15 October, with plant collections scheduled for Saturday, 7 December, from 10:00 to 12:00, near the golf and tennis clubs at De Polygoon, Hertswegenstraat 61.
In addition to native shrubs, hedges, and climbers, the program offers bee-friendly trees like fruit trees, winter and summer linden, bilberry, broom, and European bird cherry.
Tervuren’s population has surged from 15,261 in 1970 to 23,077 in 2024. That means more houses, perfect lawns, and cats. This urban growth has taken a toll on local wildlife, including the house sparrow, recently named bird of the year. Native plants, such as those available through ‘Behaag Je Tuin’ can help restore biodiversity and support resilient, locally adapted species.
