No Tervurenlaan disruption, Tervuren promises

Town hall promises there will be no disruption to the Tervurenlaan on 26-30 August when the busy Oppemstraat-Tervurenlaan crossroads will be closed for works around the tram stop.

Tervuren said it had requested that the works be completed during the summer vacation so as to minimize disruption to traffic. “The asphalt of the tram tracks will be repaired and further adjustments will be made in the surrounding area,” town hall said.

Vacation ends on 26 August for French-speaking pupils in neighboring communes. But it is unclear whether that will lead to delays.

The extra works are necessary due to bad weather damaging the new tram tracks, repaired in autumn 2023. From 26-30 August, parking and traffic is banned around the work zone.

“There is no passage possible for motorized traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians,” says Tervuren. Access from Hertogenweg, Oppemstraat, and Kleine Tervurenlaan to N3 Tervurenlaan will also be completely closed.

Overvuren might sound the best and simplest. But it twists the meaning of Tervuren away from by the river Voer or Ter Voer. Not much better is Ter Ijse for Over Ijse, a river named by the Celts. Even worse, is Druivenstreek with no history and also pointing to murky areas beyond Tervuren and Overijse, such as Bertem, Hoeilaart, and Huldenberg.

Merger: Overvuren, Terijse or Druivenstreek?

If lucky, Tervurenaars may get to choose a new name after the October elections. Following rejections of mergers elsewhere in Flanders, it is uncertain whether town grandees could trust Tervuren’s 14,164 voters with the weighty decision. And don’t forget the significant opposition to Tervuren’s last merger with Duisburg in 1977.

Tervuren pond ran dry next to Panquin

It remains unclear whether or not the pond and our fauna and flora has fallen victim to constructions works for Panquin’s luxury appartments. Workers there have been constantly pumping water away on the other side of the Duisburgsesteenweg. One theory is that the constant pumping, to clear water for Panquin’s basement, has pushed the water level under that of the pond’s natural spring.
