Tervuren now has a muscle-powered bicycle bus transporting children from home to school. The ‘fietsbus’ provides a fast, safe, and fun transportation option for Tervuren kids.

The bicycle bus requires two parents to accompany children between 3-7 years old. The aim is to tackle safety concerns so that parents can confidently send their children to school independently.

“The concept is simple: determine a route, establish a schedule, and decide on the number of accompanying parents based on the number of children to be transported. Everyone grabs their bike and off we go,” says Damien Van Wilder, one of the organizers and father.

"The bicycle bus is not a revolutionary idea," Damien tells Tervuren+. "I was talking to other parents who take their children to school by bike. And I'd met several of the other parents on the way to Mariaschool and our schedules coincide. So I thought it was a good idea to extend the service to other children."

Currently in the testing phase, the first bicycle bus line now enables kids at the Mariaschool to use the bicycle shuttle service, with safety ensured through the guidance of volunteer parents.

The bicycle bus currently departs from Eikestraat to Mariaschool in the city center, catering for children who are not yet able to cycle to school independently.

“This straightforward concept can be easily copied by other parents in other parts of Tervuren.”
